The cell and gene therapy cluster SaxoCell congratulates its industry partner Seamless Therapeutics on the announcement of a strategic global research collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company to develop programmable recombinase-based gene therapies for genetically caused hearing loss.
The collaboration aims to advance a novel generation of precise gene-editing approaches. It combines Seamless Therapeutics’ proprietary recombinase platform with Lilly’s extensive development and translational expertise in genetic hearing disorders. The goal is to specifically correct disease-causing mutations and create new therapeutic options for patients who currently have limited treatment possibilities.
“The cooperation between Seamless Therapeutics and Eli Lilly is a strong signal of our cluster’s international visibility and innovative strength,” says SaxoCell spokesperson Frank Buchholz. “It impressively highlights the potential within the technologies and companies of our network – from excellent basic research to global clinical development.”
Seamless Therapeutics develops programmable, highly specific recombinases that enable precise DNA insertions, exchanges, or deletions independently of cellular repair mechanisms. The platform opens new perspectives for disease-modifying therapies for genetic disorders. Under the agreement, Seamless will program specific recombinases for defined target genes, while Lilly will assume responsibility for further preclinical and clinical development as well as worldwide commercialization.
For SaxoCell, this partnership is further evidence of the successful development of a high-performance innovation ecosystem in the field of cell and gene therapy. The cluster brings together leading research institutions, clinics, and industry partners with the goal of translating scientific breakthroughs into clinical applications more rapidly.

Background: Kathrin Schumann studied biochemistry at the University of Tübingen and obtained her PhD at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried. During her postdoc at the University of California, San Francisco, she developed CRISPR technologies for the engineering of primary human T cells. In 2018, she was appointed as Rudolf Mößbauer Tenure Track Assistant Professor of “Engineering Immune Cells for Therapy” at TUM School of Medicine. In 2025, she took up the position of Chair of Immunology at the University of Konstanz.

Background: Tomasz Baran is Chief Medical Officer of FamiCord – the largest cord blood bank in Europe and 3rd largest worldwide. He joined cord blood banking activity in 2010, prior to that he has been holding various position in pharmaceutical industry. In his current role Tomasz is responsible for medical communication on stem cell banking and use in therapies. He presented this topic on several international events – including Cord Blood Connect (USA), Perinatal Stem Cell Conference (USA) and Advanced Therapies (UK). Tomasz is also involved in development of cell&gene therapies manufacturing activity of FamiCord. Tomasz Baran serves ad Board of Directors member at Cord Blood Association (currently incorporated into AABB).

Background: Prof. Dr. med. Mike O. Karl is a group leader at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) and professor at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD), TU Dresden. His research focuses on human retina degeneration and therapy, with a particular emphasis on photoreceptor neurodegeneration, glia biology, and human stem cell–derived cell and organoid technologies as disease and therapy‐validation models. He has made key contributions to understanding cellular mechanisms of retinal degeneration and to the development of human-based translational model systems for age-related macular degeneration and inherited retinal diseases. His work has been recognized by multiple awards in ophthalmology and regenerative medicine, and he actively bridges fundamental discovery with translational and therapeutic innovation.

Numerous visitors took the opportunity to learn more at the SaxoCell booth about new therapy approaches developed in Saxony, which are already benefiting patients with blood cancer today.
Serving as key points of contact, Nicole Modler and Stefanie Binder from SaxoCellutions – the coordination hub of SaxoCell – engaged in many in-depth conversations, answered questions, and provided insights into current developments in cell and gene therapy. The strong engagement from attendees highlighted how essential clear and accessible information about modern treatment options is.
An emotional highlight of the day was a reading by author and former UKL cancer patient Stefan Schwarz from his book “Bis ins Mark” (“To the Core”). With humor, honesty, and heartfelt sincerity, he shared his experiences during treatment – a contribution that moved and encouraged the audience in equal measure.
Scientifically, the event was enriched by two impressive lectures from Leipzig University Hospital: Prof. Ulrich Hacker gave an easy-to-understand overview of personalized cancer medicine, while PD Dr. Vladan Vucinic presented the latest advances in innovative cell therapies as well as current progress within the SaxoCell Cluster.
The consistently well-attended sessions and lively discussions demonstrated both the high demand for information and the trust patients place in advanced therapeutic approaches.

Leipzig, 15. November 2025 – Beim Informationstag Krebs des Universitätsklinikums Leipzig präsentierte sich der SaxoCell-Cluster mit einem eigenen Patiententag und stieß auf großes Interesse. Zahlreiche Besucherinnen und Besucher nutzten die Gelegenheit, sich am SaxoCell-Stand über neue, in Sachsen entwickelte Therapieansätze zu informieren, die insbesondere Patientinnen und Patienten mit Blutkrebserkrankungen bereits heute zugutekommen.
Als Ansprechpartnerinnen standen Nicole Modler und Stefanie Binder von SaxoCellutions, der Koordinationsschnittstelle von SaxoCell bereit. Sie führten viele intensive Gespräche, beantworteten Fragen und gaben Einblicke in aktuelle Entwicklungen der Zell- und Gentherapie. Das große Interesse der Gäste zeigte, wie wichtig verständliche Informationen über moderne Behandlungsoptionen sind.
Ein emotionaler Höhepunkt des Tages war die Lesung des Autors und ehemaligen UKL-Krebspatienten Stefan Schwarz aus seinem Buch „Bis ins Mark“. Mit Humor, Ehrlichkeit und spürbarer Nähe schilderte er seine Erfahrungen während der Behandlung – ein Beitrag, der das Publikum gleichermaßen berührte und stärkte.
Fachlich wurde die Veranstaltung durch zwei eindrucksvolle Vorträge aus dem Universitätsklinikums Leipzig ergänzt, in denen Prof. Ulrich Hacker einen verständlichen Überblick zur personalisierten Krebsmedizin gab und PD Dr. Vladan Vucinic die neuesten Entwicklungen innovativer Zelltherapien sowie aktuelle Fortschritte im SaxoCell-Cluster präsentierte.
Die durchgehend gut gefüllten Räume und die lebhaften Diskussionen verdeutlichten das hohe Informationsbedürfnis sowie das Vertrauen der Patientinnen und Patienten in moderne Therapieansätze.

Vom 20. bis 22. Oktober 2025 fand die Autumn School auf dem wunderschönen Mediencampus Villa Ida in Leipzig statt. Forschende und Innovator:innen der TU Dresden und des Fraunhofer-Instituts für Zelltherapie und Immunologie (IZI) kamen hier zusammen, um sich drei Tage lang intensiv mit Technologietransfer, Kommerzialisierung, Geschäftsmodellentwicklung, IP-Strategie, Pitch-Training und Finanzierung zu beschäftigen.
Sechs interdisziplinäre Teams – Ribolution, NK4Therapy, Elia Cell, Green Pharming, NeuroNK und CAR-Finder – arbeiteten engagiert daran, ihre Geschäftsideen zu verfeinern, Kommerzialisierungsstrategien zu entwickeln und sich auf ihre Abschlusspräsentationen vorzubereiten.
Im Laufe des Programms profitierten die Teilnehmenden von inspirierenden Sessions und praxisnahen Impulsen. Nadine Schmieder-Galfe eröffnete die Veranstaltung mit Einblicken in den Technologietransfer; Stefanie Wieneke führte die Teams durch das Business Model Canvas; und Anett Karl, Hans-Georg Wagner sowie Radoslav Ivanov teilten ihr Fachwissen zu geistigem Eigentum und IP-Schutz.
Ein dynamisches Pitch-Training unter der Leitung von Konrad Sell half den Teilnehmenden, ihre Präsentationsfähigkeiten für die Abschlussrunde zu schärfen. Die Expert:innenjury – bestehend aus Marion Jung, Pierre Tangermann und Christian John – gab allen Teams wertvolles Feedback. Zudem bot Silvio Weber von Miltenyi Biotec spannende Einblicke aus der Industrie und berichtete aus der Praxis des Technologietransfers in den Lebenswissenschaften.
Ein herzlicher Dank gilt den Hauptorganisator:innen Nadine Schmieder-Galfe und Alexander Funkner für ihr Engagement und ihre großartige Arbeit, die diese inspirierende Veranstaltung möglich gemacht haben.
Diese drei Tage waren geprägt von Lernen, Austausch und unternehmerischem Geist – ein hervorragendes Beispiel dafür, wie Zusammenarbeit zwischen Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft Innovation vorantreibt.

He has been involved in the foundation of multiple biotech companies and has over 25 years experience in the European and US venture capital markets. Background: Lukas Bunse studied medicine at Heidelberg University and at University College London. As part of his medical dissertation, he developed peptide vaccines against gliomas. During his doctoral studies in the context of an MD/PhD program at Heidelberg University, he conducted research at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg and at Harvard Medical School on cellular antitumor responses, autoimmunity in the central nervous system, and oncometabolites. Since 2019, he has led the Cell Therapy team within the Clinical Cooperation Unit for Neuroimmunology and Brain Tumor Immunology at the DKFZ in Heidelberg.

Background: Lorenz Mayr is an internationally experienced executive in the biopharma and life sciences sector, most recently serving as CEO of Vector BioPharma AG in Basel. Previously, he held senior leadership positions at GE Healthcare, AstraZeneca, Novartis, and Bayer, and he serves on several supervisory boards and scientific advisory boards. Since March 2024, he has been a Non-Executive Director at FundaMental Pharma GmbH, a Heidelberg-based company developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, he is Senior Healthcare Advisor at EQT Investments, advising companies and institutions in the life sciences field.

Background: Until the end of 2022, Prof. Dr. Ralf Huss was founding Director of the Institute of Digital Medicine (IDM) and Prof. of Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics at University Hospital Augsburg, Germany. Previously he spent many years in pharmaceutical and diagnostic industry, founded some biotech enterprises and authored more than 180 papers on cancer and stem cell research as well as the use on AI in digital medicine.
Two days full of exchange, inspiration, and new perspectives: In Mainz, we had the great opportunity to get to know the curATime Cluster for Future better – and to learn from each other.
A special focus was on the synergies in Artificial Intelligence, highlighted in four expert talks:

A real highlight was the tour of the TRON laboratories, giving us valuable insights into the local research environment.

As part of Germany’s Clusters4Future initiative, PROXIDRUGS is being funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space since October 2021. The cluster focuses on developing new treatments for diseases with high unmet medical needs by utilizing the new concept of targeted protein degradation. Proximity-inducing drugs can trigger the degradation of disease-relevant proteins in a highly specific manner by directing them towards the cellular recycling system. That will open up new therapeutic options in a broad spectrum of diseases. It is assumed that 80% of proteins that are so far deemed as undruggable may be targeted by this strategy.
PROXIDRUGS aims at improving this novel class of drugs in multiple ways: the strategy comprises the identification of suitable functional subunits for molecule engineering; the directed optimization of pharmacological properties; and the transfer to clinical phases. In line with this, the cluster interlinks currently 22 partners from academia and industry, covering the entire value chain from basic to translational research.

The National Network Office GCT Germany was established as part of the National Strategy for Gene and Cell-Based Therapies (GCT). The office is based at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and operates independently in accordance with the mandate of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Our mission is to build a national GCT community through independent information and networking, ensuring the inclusion of all stakeholder groups. Background: Ulrike Weirauch studied Molecular Life Science at the University of Lübeck and earned her PhD in the research group of Prof. Achim Aigner at the Biochemical-Pharmacological Center of Philipps University Marburg in the field of cancer research. She worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Independent Department of Clinical Pharmacology at the Rudolf Boehm Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology, Leipzig University. Since 2021, she has been working as a scientist and science manager in Dr. Kristin Reiche’s group at the Department of Medical Bioinformatics at the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology IZI, focusing on projects at the intersection of molecular precision medicine and bioinformatics.

Rebekka Wehner graduated in biology, did her Ph.D. and habilitation on dendritic cells. In the Institute of Immunology, medical faculty, TU Dresden, her research focuses on human immune cells like dendritic cells, monocytes/macrophages, natural killer cells, and T cells in the context of anti-tumor immune responses and therapies. Since 2016, she coordinates the NCT/UCC Immune Monitoring Unit Dresden, which offers an accompanying immune monitoring program during clinical studies. She supports the characterization of immune cells in blood, bone marrow, and tissues of tumor patients using multiplex flow cytometry and fluorescence-based immunohistochemistry.

Background: Dr. Christoph Conrad worked for many years on vaccine evaluation at the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) and later headed the Office for Scientific and Regulatory Advice (OSRA), an infrastructure of the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF). He also gained international and governmental experience at the WHO in Geneva, the BMBF (now BMFTR), and the Federal Chancellery. Since July 2022, he has been Head of Staff Office Regulatory Affairs at the BIH and, since June 2024, also leads the newly established Regulatory Support Unit.
Background: Dr. Verena Lütschg is a 5-star speaker and an expert on technology and digital transformation. With a PhD in molecular biology and many years of experience as a management consultant, she uniquely combines science and future technologies with practical approaches. In her talks, she explores how disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, or genome editing are transforming not only industries but also society. As a keynote speaker, she captivates audiences with precise analyses and visionary approaches that help companies actively shape technological change. Those who book Verena Lütschg as a guest speaker gain valuable insights for driving innovation and looking toward the future.
Background: Dr. Marcela Maus is the Paula J. O’Keeffe Endowed Chair at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Director of the Cellular Immunotherapy Program, and Professor at Harvard Medical School, where she leads a laboratory focused on advancing CAR T cell therapies for cancer. Trained at MIT, the University of Pennsylvania, and Memorial Sloan Kettering, she has made pioneering contributions to the development of CAR T cells, including research on treatment resistance and therapy-related toxicities. Alongside her scientific and clinical work, she mentors the next generation of researchers and enjoys family life with her husband, three children, and pets, as well as hobbies like gardening and skiing.

Background: Prof. Müller obtained his MD in Freiburg, Germany and started his clinical education in Hamburg. With a focus on targeting malignant B cells from his early research career he did a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Ira Pastan, at the NCI on resistance to CD22-targeted therapy in ALL and aggressive lymphoma. After his post-doc he continued the work on B cell targeting in Erlangen, Germany using first antibody directed therapies and then CAR T cells with a focus on translational concepts including tumor microenvironment and functional aspects of a patient’s immune system. As head of the CAR T cell unit, he pioneers CAR T cell therapies in novel indications including solid tumors and autoimmune diseases.

Background: Prof. Dr. Dimitrios Mougiakakos is Director of the Department of Hematology, Oncology and Cell Therapy at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. He studied medicine in Hannover and trained in hematology and oncology in Freiburg, Regensburg, and Erlangen, with a research fellowship at the Karolinska Institute. He played a key role in the first clinical applications of CAR-T cell therapy for autoimmune diseases.

Background: Studied Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Production Technology. Passionate about the interaction between bioworkflows and automation. He leads laboratory automation and bioproduction at Fraunhofer IPA. Serial founder (Dispendix, Nanolockin, Liquimetrix).
On June 20, SaxoCell participated in the Long Night of Science (LNDW) at two locations: in Leipzig at Fraunhofer IZI and in Dresden at CRTD.
Both venues drew great interest – our booths were consistently well attended by curious guests of all ages who wanted to learn more about innovative therapies from the Saxon cell and gene therapy cluster.
Through hands-on stations, interactive models, and educational games, we presented complex topics like CAR immune cell therapies and gene therapies in an accessible way.
A particular highlight was our cell quiz, where visitors could discover which immune cell best matches their personality – from the T-helper cell to the natural killer cell or the macrophage.
A special moment of the evening was the panel discussion with the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism, titled:
“Innovation and Doubt: How Science Moves Society”
Why does medical progress sometimes trigger skepticism?
Experts in medicine, ethics, and social sciences discussed opportunities, concerns, and the role of trust in new technologies.

An beiden Standorten war das Interesse groß – unsere Stände wurden durchgehend sehr gut besucht von neugierigen Gästen jeden Alters, die sich für innovative Therapieformen aus dem sächsischen Zell- und Gentherapie-Cluster interessierten.
Mit Mitmach-Stationen, Modellen zum Anfassen und interaktiven Spielen haben wir komplexe Inhalte wie CAR-Immunzelltherapien und Gentherapien anschaulich vermittelt.
Besonders beliebt war unser Zell-Quiz, bei dem die Besucherinnen und Besucher herausfinden konnten, welche Immunzelle ihnen am ähnlichsten ist – von der T-Helferzelle über die natürliche Killerzelle bis hin zum Makrophagen.

An beiden Standorten war das Interesse groß – unsere Stände wurden durchgehend sehr gut besucht von neugierigen Gästen jeden Alters, die sich für innovative Therapieformen aus dem sächsischen Zell- und Gentherapie-Cluster interessierten.
Mit Mitmach-Stationen, Modellen zum Anfassen und interaktiven Spielen haben wir komplexe Inhalte wie CAR-Immunzelltherapien und Gentherapien anschaulich vermittelt.
Besonders beliebt war unser Zell-Quiz, bei dem die Besucherinnen und Besucher herausfinden konnten, welche Immunzelle ihnen am ähnlichsten ist – von der T-Helferzelle über die natürliche Killerzelle bis hin zum Makrophagen.
Ein besonderes Highlight war die Podiumsdiskussion mit dem Hannah-Arendt-Institut für Totalitarismusforschung zum Thema:
„Innovation und Vorbehalt: Wie Wissenschaft die Gesellschaft bewegt“
Warum ruft medizinischer Fortschritt oft auch Skepsis hervor?
Expertinnen und Experten aus Medizin, Ethik und Sozialwissenschaften diskutierten über Chancen, Ängste und das Vertrauen in neue Technologien.

Am 30. April veranstaltete SaxoCell gemeinsam mit dem Cluster4Future SEMECO die zweite SaxoCell Fuck-Up Night im Cosmo Wissenschaftsforum in Dresden – und das mit großem Erfolg.
Drei mutige Redner standen auf der Bühne: die Startup-Gründer Jens Geißler von DIA42 und Jan Moritz Middeke von Cancilico sowie der Hardware-Entwickler Alexander Gürbig von ConnCons. Sie teilten das, worüber sonst selten gesprochen wird: harte Lektionen, unerwartete Wendungen und die „weniger glanzvollen“ Seiten des Unternehmertums.
Ihre Geschichten waren ehrlich, ungeschönt und inspirierend – manchmal lustig, manchmal schmerzhaft, aber immer authentisch. Und vor allem: sie haben echte Gespräche ausgelöst und wertvolle Impulse gegeben.
Mit neugierigen Fragen, lebendigem Austausch und wohlverdienten Snacks und Drinks haben wir einmal mehr gezeigt: Scheitern ist nicht das Gegenteil von Erfolg – es ist ein Teil davon.

On June 20, SaxoCell participated in the Long Night of Science (LNDW) at two locations: in Leipzig at Fraunhofer IZI and in Dresden at CRTD.
Both venues drew great interest – our booths were consistently well attended by curious guests of all ages who wanted to learn more about innovative therapies from the Saxon cell and gene therapy cluster.
Through hands-on stations, interactive models, and educational games, we presented complex topics like CAR immune cell therapies and gene therapies in an accessible way.
A particular highlight was our cell quiz, where visitors could discover which immune cell best matches their personality – from the T-helper cell to the natural killer cell or the macrophage.
A special moment of the evening was the panel discussion with the Hannah Arendt Institute for Research on Totalitarianism, titled:
“Innovation and Doubt: How Science Moves Society”
Why does medical progress sometimes trigger skepticism?
Experts in medicine, ethics, and social sciences discussed opportunities, concerns, and the role of trust in new technologies.

Courage, Failure, and Real Talk: 2nd SaxoCell Fuck-Up Night at Cosmo Wissenschaftsforum
On April 30th, SaxoCell, in collaboration with Cluster4Future SEMECO, proudly hosted the second edition of the SaxoCell Fuck-Up Night at the Cosmo Wissenschaftsforum in Dresden.
The evening featured three courageous speakers: startup founders Jens Geißler from DIA42 and Jan Moritz Middeke from Cancilico, as well as hardware developer Alexander Gürbig from ConnCons. They took to the stage to share what is often left unsaid: the hard lessons, the unexpected setbacks, and the “not-so-glorious” moments of building a business.
Their stories were raw, honest, and inspiring – at times humorous, at times painful – but always authentic. Most importantly, they sparked real conversations and delivered valuable insights for everyone in attendance.
With curious questions, engaging discussions, and well-earned snacks and drinks, the night proved once again: failure isn’t the opposite of success – it’s part of the journey.

Zwei inspirierende Tage voller spannender Vorträge und wertvoller Austauschmöglichkeiten – sowohl während der Sessions als auch beim abendlichen Networking-Event.

German Biotechnology Days 2025 – SaxoCell Was There!
This week, SaxoCell was represented at the German Biotechnology Days (DBT) in Heidelberg (April 9–10), with Anette Bartsch and Cathleen Meerheim from Saxocellutions attending on our behalf.
The event featured two inspiring days full of exciting presentations and valuable networking opportunities. A special highlight was the strong contribution from our cluster spokeswoman, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Köhl, who brought SaxoCell’s vision to the stage.
Another key moment: the symbolic handover of the DBT baton to André Hofmann from biosaxony, marking the start of the countdown to DBT 2026 in Leipzig!

Representing us were SaxoCell spokesperson Frank Buchholz, along with Maren Henneken and Stefanie Binder from the Hub team.
This year’s hosts were Munich-based clusters MCube and CNATM. In addition to their thematic focuses on mobility and nucleic acid therapies, Best Practices on cluster sustainability, such as those presented by BioRN, were shared. During the panel discussion, participants received valuable insights into attracting young talent and skilled professionals, as well as transitioning Clusters4Future to the second funding phase. An open dialogue with representatives from the BMBF and Projektträger Jülich rounded off the meeting.
As in the past two years, the annual exchange provided an ideal opportunity to gain new insights, learn from one another, and reconnect with long-standing contacts. We’re looking forward to next year!

Genom-Editierung auf dem Weg zu Therapien – Rückschau DG-GT Jahrestreffen 2025
Dresden, 10.-11. März 2025 – SaxoCell freut sich, am DG-GT Thementag 2025: „Genome Editing Towards Therapies“ teilgenommen zu haben, der am 10. und 11. März im Deutschen Hygiene-Museum in Dresden stattfand. Diese hochkarätige Veranstaltung, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Gentherapien (DG-GT), der Technischen Universität Dresden, SaxoCell und dem Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus Dresden organisiert wurde, versammelte führende Experten, um die neuesten Durchbrüche in der Genom-Editierung und deren therapeutisches Potenzial zu diskutieren.
Unter der Leitung von Frank Buchholz (Sprecher von SaxoCell) und Zoltan Ivics SaxoCell PI), bot die Konferenz ein dynamisches Forum für die Behandlung von Schlüsselthemen wie CRISPR-Screening, innovative Delivery-Technologien, klinische Anwendungen und ethische Überlegungen zum Genome Editing. Der Wissens- und Ideenaustausch hat das Engagement von SaxoCell für die Entwicklung von Therapien der nächsten Generation für bedürftige Patienten weiter verstärkt.

Advancing Genome Editing Towards Therapies – DG-GT Annual Meeting 2025 Recap
Dresden, March 10-11, 2025 – SaxoCell proudly participated in the DG-GT Theme Day 2025: Genome Editing Towards Therapies, held on March 10-11 at the German Hygiene Museum in Dresden. This high-profile event, organized in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gentherapien (DG-GT), Technische Universität Dresden, SaxoCell, and the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus Dresden, convened leading experts to discuss the latest breakthroughs in genome editing and their therapeutic potential.
Under the leadership of SaxoCell speaker Frank Buchholz and SaxoCell PI Zoltan Ivics, the conference provided a dynamic forum for addressing key topics, including CRISPR screening, advanced delivery technologies, clinical applications, and ethical considerations in genome editing. The exchange of knowledge and ideas further reinforced SaxoCell’s commitment to pioneering next-generation therapies for patients in need.

SaxoCell starts its second funding phase
The SaxoCell consortium kicked off the second funding phase with a successful meeting on January 20th and 21st, 2025, at Fraunhofer IZI in Leipzig. In an inspiring and productive gathering, the project teams exchanged ideas about their upcoming three years of research in the field of cell and gene therapy.
During both days, the teams presented their innovative ideas and plans for the further development of the current eight SaxoCell projects. A special highlight of the meeting was the involvement of the project sponsor, Jülich, who provided valuable insights and support for the ongoing implementation of the research projects.
Additionally, a creative Lego Serious Play® workshop, conducted by mikomi – the Institute for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Cooperation at the University of Mittweida, allowed participants to develop innovative solutions and strengthen collaboration within the consortium. Another highlight was the inspiring keynote by Prof. Andreas Zaby from the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovations (SPRIND), which opened up new perspectives on groundbreaking innovations.
Breakthrough in the Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases with CD19 CAR-T Cell Therapy
A major advancement in medicine: for the first time, a novel CD19 CAR-T cell therapy has been successfully used to treat a patient with multi-refractory primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). This severe autoimmune disease causes the immune system to destroy platelets, leading to potentially life-threatening bleeding.
The innovative therapy achieved sustained remission in a patient who had exhausted all conventional treatments, including a splenectomy. By specifically eliminating harmful B cells responsible for producing autoantibodies, the CAR-T cell therapy not only normalized platelet levels but also alleviated symptoms and significantly improved the patient’s quality of life—with fewer side effects compared to cancer treatment.
This groundbreaking case study was recently published in The Lancet (January 2025) by a team led by SaxoCell spokesperson Prof. Martin Bornhäuser. The success was made possible through collaboration with Dimitrios Mougiakakis from Magdeburg, an expert in CAR-T therapy for autoimmune diseases, who managed cell collection and reinfusion, as well as Karolin Trautmann-Grill and Malte von Bonin from Dresden, who coordinated patient care and follow-up.
“We have successfully used this therapy in cancer treatment many times before. With the SaxoCell Cluster for Cell and Gene Therapy, we have the ideal conditions to apply our knowledge and expertise to other indications as well,” explains SaxoCell spokesperson Prof. Frank Buchholz. Despite these promising results, further clinical studies are necessary to evaluate the long-term safety and broader applicability of this therapy.

Successful Workshop on Automation in Cell and Gene Therapy: SaxoCell Sets Important Impulses
On December 6, 2024, a groundbreaking workshop titled “Automated Production for Cell and Gene Therapy” took place at the DKMS Life Science Lab. Organized by SaxoCell in collaboration with Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen (WFS) and VE.MAS innovativ, the event brought together leading experts in cell and gene therapy as well as Saxon providers of automation solutions.
The goal of the workshop was to identify the potential of automation in cell and gene therapy and to develop new approaches to make the industry more efficient and future-ready. The discussions were so engaging that they extended well beyond the scheduled time. “The enthusiasm and commitment of all participants showed just how strong the spirit of innovation is in this field,” said Stephanie Wieneke from SaxoCell.
A highlight of the event was an exclusive tour of the highly automated DKMS Life Science Lab, where participants gained fascinating insights into cutting-edge laboratory automation, serving as a model for future developments in cell and gene therapy.
“These are exactly the impulses we want to create with SaxoCell to drive the development of the cell and gene therapy sector in Saxony and across Germany,” emphasized SaxoCell. “The combination of scientific expertise and innovative automation solutions offers tremendous potential for growth and progress.”
The organizers announced that the next workshop is already being planned for early 2025. The focus remains on strengthening collaboration within the industry and promoting innovative solutions.

Saxony is increasingly establishing itself as a leading region for innovations in the life sciences sector. In an interview with Handelsblatt on December 3, 2024, Thomas Horn, Managing Director of Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH (WFS), emphasized the region’s outstanding development and future prospects.
“Saxony is one of the most exciting life sciences regions in Germany,” Horn stated in the discussion. He particularly highlighted the Free State Dresden’s growing significance as a hub for cell and gene therapy, one of the most promising advancements in the healthcare sector.
With innovation clusters like the Cluster4Future SaxoCell and close collaboration between research institutions, universities, and companies, Saxony offers a unique ecosystem for groundbreaking developments in diagnostics and therapy. “We see strong momentum in the region, which excites both scientists and investors,” Horn emphasized.
Supported by targeted funding programs and excellent infrastructure, Saxony is attracting more and more start-ups and established companies from the life sciences sector. Facilities such as BioCity Leipzig and the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) serve as key hubs for networking and advancing innovation.
In addition to its economic and scientific achievements, Horn also praised the region’s international reach. “Saxony is increasingly positioning itself as a global player in the life sciences industry,” he said.

At the end of November, the 8th Life Science Forum Leipzig took place, bringing together over 80 participants from science and industry to discuss the latest developments and perspectives in precision medicine. Organized jointly by Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen (WFS) and the SaxoCell Cluster for Future, the event impressively demonstrated the importance of dialogue between research and business for progress in medical precision technology.
Following the opening by Uwe Lienig (WFS) and Stefanie Binder (SaxoCell), participants enjoyed a diverse program featuring high-profile presentations. Highlights included inspiring keynotes by Prof. Dr. Martin Bornhäuser (University Hospital Dresden), Dr. Maximilian Merz (University Hospital Leipzig), and Dr. Thorsten Pisch (Gilead Sciences), offering fascinating insights into the latest advancements and challenges in precision medicine. The program was further enriched by presentations on innovative approaches in diagnostics and therapy, emphasizing practical solutions for the healthcare of the future.

Finance Day Celebrates Premiere in Leipzig – Successful Networking of Life-Science Start-ups and Investors
The Finance Day, one of the most important events for start-up, growth, and capital market financing in the life sciences industry for the past 18 years, has opened a new chapter this year: for the first time, the prestigious event was held in Leipzig.
Organized by GoingPublic Media and the Plattform Life Sciences, the Finance Day provided an inspiring platform for promising life science projects and start-ups. In the unique atmosphere of BioCity Leipzig, innovative companies showcased themselves to renowned investors from across Germany.
Particularly notable were the contributions from the SaxoCell Future Cluster, including companies like Seamless Therapeutics, Katana Labs, and Singleron, which presented their groundbreaking technologies and business models. Ulrike Köhl, Cluster spokesperson of SaxoCell, took the opportunity to introduce the future cluster and other partner companies such as Cancilico, T-Cell Tolerance, and T-Curx to a wide audience.
In addition to the exciting pitches from the start-ups, networking and personal exchange were also at the heart of the event. The concluding evening event provided an ideal setting to forge new connections and further deepen the synergies within the industry.
With the first Finance Day in Leipzig, it was impressively demonstrated that the region is becoming a growing hub for innovation and collaboration in life sciences.
For 18 years, the Finance Day has been bringing together companies, investors, and industry experts from the life sciences sector. The goal of the event is to provide founders and start-ups with access to capital providers and thereby promote the development of innovative projects and technologies.
Das Konsortium SaxoCell hat mit einem erfolgreichen Kick-off-Meeting am 20. und 21. Januar 2025 die zweite Förderphase am Fraunhofer IZI in Leipzig eingeläutet. In einer inspirierenden und produktiven Zusammenkunft tauschten sich die Projektteams über die kommenden drei Jahre ihrer Forschung im Bereich der Zell- und Gentherapie aus.
Am beiden Tagen präsentierten die Teams ihre innovativen Ideen und Pläne zur Weiterentwicklung der aktuell acht SaxoCell Projekte. Ein besonderer Höhepunkt des Treffens war die Beteiligung des Projektträgers Jülich, der wertvolle Einblicke und Unterstützung für die weitere Umsetzung der Forschungsprojekte bot.
Zudem ermöglichte ein kreativer Lego Serious Play®-Workshop, durchgeführt von mikomi – dem Institut für Mittelstandskooperation der Hochschule Mittweida, den Teilnehmern, innovative Lösungen zu entwickeln und die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb des Konsortiums zu stärken. Ein weiteres Highlight war die inspirierende Keynote von Prof. Andreas Zaby von der Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen (SPRIND), die neue Perspektiven auf bahnbrechende Innovationen eröffnete.
Ein bedeutender Fortschritt in der Medizin: Erstmals wurde eine neuartige Therapie mit CD19 CAR-T-Zellen erfolgreich zur Behandlung eines Patienten mit multi-refraktärer primärer Immunthrombozytopenie (ITP) eingesetzt. Diese schwere Autoimmunerkrankung führt dazu, dass das Immunsystem Thrombozyten zerstört und potenziell lebensbedrohliche Blutungen verursacht.
Die innovative Therapie erzielte eine anhaltende Remission bei einem Patienten, der zuvor alle konventionellen Behandlungen, einschließlich einer Splenektomie, ausgeschöpft hatte. Durch die gezielte Eliminierung schädlicher B-Zellen, die für die Produktion von Autoantikörpern verantwortlich sind, normalisierte die CAR-T-Zelltherapie nicht nur die Thrombozytenwerte, sondern linderte auch die Symptome und verbesserte die Lebensqualität des Patienten erheblich – und das mit weniger Nebenwirkungen als in der Krebsbehandlung.
Diese bahnbrechende Fallstudie wurde kürzlich in The Lancet (Januar 2025) von einem Team unter Leitung von SaxoCell-Sprecher Prof. Martin Bornhäuser veröffentlicht. Gemeinsam mit Dimitrios Mougiakakis aus Magdeburg, einem Experten für die CAR-T-Behandlung von Autoimmunerkrankungen, der die Zellgewinnung und -rückgabe leitete, sowie Karolin Trautmann-Grill und Malte von Bonin aus Dresden, die die Patientenbetreuung und Nachsorge koordinierten, konnte dieser therapeutische Erfolg erzielt werden.
„Wir haben diese Therapie bereits vielfach in der Krebsbehandlung erfolgreich eingesetzt. Mit dem SaxoCell-Cluster für Zell- und Gentherapie haben wir ideale Bedingungen, um dieses Wissen und unsere Expertise auch für andere Indikationen zu nutzen,“ erklärt SaxoCell-Sprecher Prof. Frank Buchholz. Trotz dieser vielversprechenden Ergebnisse sind weitere klinische Studien erforderlich, um die Langzeitsicherheit und breite Anwendbarkeit dieser Therapie zu evaluieren.
Am 6. Dezember 2024 fand im DKMS Life Science Lab ein richtungsweisender Workshop mit dem Titel „Automatisierte Produktion für die Zell- und Gentherapie“ statt. Die Veranstaltung, organisiert von SaxoCell in Zusammenarbeit mit der Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen (WFS) und VE.MAS innovativ, brachte führende Experten der Zell- und Gentherapie sowie sächsische Anbieter von Automatisierungslösungen an einen Tisch.
Ziel des Workshops war es, die Potenziale der Automatisierung in der Zell- und Gentherapie zu identifizieren und gemeinsam neue Ansätze zu entwickeln, um die Branche effizienter und zukunftsfähiger zu gestalten. Der Austausch war geprägt von intensiven Diskussionen, die weit über die geplante Zeit hinausgingen. „Die Resonanz und das Engagement aller Teilnehmenden haben gezeigt, wie groß der Innovationsgeist in diesem Bereich ist“, erklärte Stephanie Wieneke von SaxoCell.
Ein Highlight der Veranstaltung war die exklusive Führung durch das hochautomatisierte DKMS Life Science Lab. Die Teilnehmer erhielten dabei spannende Einblicke in modernste Laborautomatisierung, die als Vorbild für zukünftige Entwicklungen in der Zell- und Gentherapie dienen können.
„Genau diese Impulse wollen wir mit SaxoCell schaffen, um die Entwicklung der Zell- und Gentherapie-Branche in Sachsen und ganz Deutschland zu fördern“, betonte SaxoCell. „Die Kombination aus wissenschaftlicher Expertise und innovativen Automatisierungslösungen bietet enormes Potenzial für Wachstum und Fortschritt.“
Die Veranstalter kündigten an, dass der nächste Workshop bereits für Anfang 2025 in Planung ist. Ziel bleibt es, den Austausch und die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb der Branche weiter zu stärken und innovative Lösungen zu fördern.

Mit dem ersten Finance Day in Leipzig wurde eindrucksvoll unter Beweis gestellt, dass die Region ein wachsendes Zentrum für Innovation und Zusammenarbeit im Bereich Life Sciences ist.

Unser SaxoCell Makrophagen-Projekt xMac, vertreten durch Anke Fuchs und Ludwig Englmeier, hat den 4. Platz in der Businessplan-Phase des Science4Life Venture Cups erreicht! Ein toller Schritt in Richtung Startup-Gründung, weitere werden folgen.
Am 23. Juni in Leipzig und eine Woche später am 30. Juni in Dresden hatten interessierte große und kleine ForscherInnen die Möglichkeit, mit uns in Kontakt zu treten und spielerisch die neusten Entwicklungen im Bereich der Zell- und Gentherapie zu erkunden.
Bei selbst gebackenen Keksen erläuterten wir unseren BesucherInnen anhand eines Magnetspiels, wie neue Therapien (u.a. die CAR-T-Zelltherapie) funktionieren. Des Weiteren konnten Kinder und Erwachsene anhand unseres kleinen Immunzell-Quiz herausfinden, ob ihre Charaktereigenschaften eher einer kampflustigen Natürlichen Killerzelle, einer empathischen T-Helferzelle oder einem verfressenen Makrophagen entsprechen – dafür gab es dann auch einen entsprechenden Button zum mit nach Hause nehmen!
Unter der Leitung unseres Industriepartners ecSeq fand in Dresden unser erster Workshop zur Analyse von RNA-seq-Daten statt, der einen Einblick in das Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) bot.
Über vier Tage wurden die Teilnehmenden darin geschult, NGS-Datenformate zu verstehen und auf mögliche Probleme und Fehler richtig zu reagieren. Sie lernten, u.a. diagnostische Grafiken und Statistiken zu erstellen und verschiedene Ansätze für die differentielle Expressionsanalyse zu vergleichen.
Von Anfang an genossen Teilnehmende und Dozierende lehrreichen Unterricht und fruchtbare Diskussionen.

Frank Buchholz wurde als einer von zwanzig Professoren & Gründern für seine Leistungen beim Innovationstransfer von Universität in Industrie geehrt.
Die Auszeichnung würdigt seine beeindruckenden Forschungserfolge und seinen herausragenden Beitrag zur Entwicklung der Genome-Editing-Technologie, insbesondere im Hinblick auf mögliche therapeutische Anwendungen.
Am 11. und 12. September fand unser zweites Konsortiumstreffen und Treffen des wissenschaftlichen Beirats (SAB) in Leipzig statt. Mit rund 80 Teilnehmenden vor Ort und weiteren online verbrachten wir zwei wunderbare Tage voller interessanter Präsentationen, Diskussionen und Vorträge.
Neben Vertretern unserer Projekte und Plattformen waren auch unsere SAB-Mitglieder sowie Vertreter des Bundesministeriums für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und des Projektträgers Jülich (PtJ) in Leipzig oder online anwesend und haben uns wertvolle Impulse gegeben!
Wir bedanken uns bei allen Teilnehmenden, insbesondere bei unseren SAB-Mitgliedern und den Vertretern von BMBF und PtJ sowie bei unserem Hauptredner vom BIH, Christof von Kalle!
Im Anschluss an unser diesjähriges Konsortialmeeting wurde der SaxoCell Verein gegründet.
13 Mitglieder vollzogen die Gründung am 12.09.2023 in Leipzig.
Im Rahmen der sächsischen Wissenschaftskampagne „SPIN 2030“ besuchte Wissenschaftsminister Sebastian Gemkow am 26. Oktober 2023 die Universitätsmedizin Leipzig.
Minister Gemkow wurden innovative Therapieoptionen vorgestellt, die in enger Kooperation mit SaxoCell erforscht und an sächsischen Kliniken bereits angeboten werden.
Eine weitere erfolgreiche Ausgabe der Leipzig Immune ONcology (LION) Konferenz fand am Fraunhofer IZI und den medizinischen Fakultäten der Universität Leipzig statt – mit den SaxoCell Sprechern Ulrike Köhl und Uwe Platzbecker als Konferenzpräsidenten.
Es war großartig, so viele Vertreter von SaxoCell-Projekten, Plattformen und dem Hub dort zu sehen!
Wir hörten interessante Vorträge zu aktuellen Themen der Zell- und Immuntherapie, wie z.B. CAR-T-Zellen. Besonders die Keynote-Vorträge von Stephan Mielke vom Karolinska Institut und dem Universitätsklinikum Schweden sowie von Andreas Mackensen vom Universitätsklinikum Erlangen verdeutlichten die Bedeutung dieser innovativen ATMPs für Krebs- und Autoimmunpatienten weltweit. Auch Frank Buchholz, Mitglied von SaxoCell, hielt eine Keynote zum Thema “Genome Editing in der Krebsforschung”.
Unser 3. SaxoCell Mini-Symposium zum Thema präklinische Forschungsmodelle fand live im CRTD statt und war auch online für Teilnehmende außerhalb Dresdens zugänglich.
Unsere Referentinnen und Referenten Prof. Renata Stripecke (Universitätsklinikum Köln), Prof. Karsten Kretschmer (CRTD/PLID), Dr. Antje Dietrich (Universitätsklinikum Carl Gustav Carus) und Dr. Julia Schüler (Charles River Laboratories) präsentierten, wie sie Mausmodelle zur Evaluierung und Validierung ihrer Forschung in den Bereichen CAR-T, Treg-Zellen sowie (Radio-)Onkologie einsetzen.
Begleitet wurden die Vorträge von einer Unternehmenspräsentation der Charles River Laboratories, die sich auf eine Reihe von präklinischen und klinischen Labor-, Gentherapie- und Zelltherapiedienstleistungen für die Pharma-, Medizintechnik- und Biotechnologiebranche spezialisiert haben und einen Einblick in ihre Arbeit boten.
Wir danken allen Vortragenden und Teilnehmenden für ihre spannenden Präsentationen und anregenden Fragen und dafür, dass sie unser Mini-Symposium zu einer so hervorragenden Veranstaltung gemacht haben!
Am 16. Januar diskutierten Vertreter aus Politik, Medizin, Gesundheitswesen und Industrie in Berlin bei “SaxoCell meets Politics”, wie die Entwicklung und Anwendung von Zell- und Gentherapien in Sachsen vorangetrieben werden kann. Staatsminister Sebastian Gemkow eröffnete den parlamentarischen Abend, gefolgt von Flash-Talks der SaxoCell-Sprecher, die das Potenzial der Therapien betonten und auf Kosten sowie Zulassungshürden hinwiesen.
Die niedergelassene Internistin Beatrix Schröder teilte beeindruckende Erfahrungen mit der CAR-T-Zell-Therapie am Uniklinikum Leipzig, die ihr Leben gerettet hatte. Weitere Beiträge von Industrievertretern und Politikern beleuchteten Kosten und Zugang zu innovativen Therapien.
In einer abschließenden Paneldiskussion wurden regulatorische, finanzielle und strukturelle Fragen im Zusammenhang mit der Entwicklung, Zulassung und Anwendung neuer Therapieformen erörtert. Der Abend wurde von Uwe Platzbecker und Anne-Sophie Kubasch moderiert. Die Veranstalter dankten allen Mitwirkenden und Teilnehmern für die interessanten Beiträge und freuen sich auf eine Fortsetzung von “SaxoCell meets Politics” zur Vertiefung der diskutierten Aspekte im Zell- und Gentherapiebereich.
In enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem Excellence Center der TU Dresden TUD|excite hat SaxoCell seinen allerersten InvestorsClub im aufstrebenden Bereich der Biomedizin & Digital Health in Kooperation mit der Landesregierung ins Leben gerufen.
In den repräsentativen Räumlichkeiten der Sächsischen Landesvertretung Berlin versammelten sich eine Vielzahl von Investoren und Business Angels, um den sorgfältig ausgewählten sieben sächsischen Teams eine Plattform zu bieten, ihre innovativen Geschäftsmodelle zu präsentieren.
Besonderer Dank gebührt Staatsminister Oliver Schenk für seinen inspirierenden Vortrag über die Innovationskraft Sachsens sowie den äußerst interessierten Investoren. Ein herzlicher Dank geht auch an unsere Spin-off-Teams für ihre herausragenden Präsentationen, die zu einem äußerst aufschlussreichen und spannenden Nachmittag beigetragen haben.
Am 7. und 8. März öffneten sich die Türen für das 26. Jahressymposium der Interdisziplinären Gruppe für Laboratoriumsmedizin und Durchflusszytometrie (IGLD), das in der schönen Kongresshalle des Leipziger Zoos stattfand.
In zwei SaxoCell-Sessions moderierten unsere PIs Martin Bornhäuser und Uwe Platzbecker sowie Ulrike Köhl und Anja Feldmann neben ihren eigenen auch die Vorträge von Michael Hudecek, Mathias Hänel, Manavi Jain, Dominik Schmiedel, Kristin Reiche und Torsten Tonn zu aktuellen Themen der Immuntherapie und Präzisionsmedizin aus unserem Cluster und diskutierten sie gemeinsam mit dem Publikum. Vielen Dank an unsere Referentinnen und Referenten sowie Vorsitzende!
Unser Austausch beschränkte sich nicht nur auf die Sessions. Auch an unserem SaxoCell-Stand hatten wir Gelegenheit, mit zahlreichen Teilnehmenden aus Medizin, Forschung und Industrie in Kontakt zu treten.
Das SPIN2030 Wissenschaftsfestival in den Technischen Sammlungen Dresden präsentierte am Wochenende eindrucksvoll die Wissenschaftslandschaft in Sachsen.
Auch wir waren dabei und haben mithilfe von DNA-Origami, CAR-T Zell Angelspiel und Immunzellen-Quiz unsere Arbeit und die Zell- und Gentherapien begreifbar gemacht. Das Interesse war groß und wir tauschten uns mit Menschen aus verschiedensten Bereichen der Gesellschaft aus.
Außerdem lieferte Dorit Teichmann aus unserem SaxoCell-Hub-Team beim Podcast YOU ASK WE EXPLAIN zum Thema „Von Innovationen und Inspirationen: Die Forschung im Spannungsfeld von Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft“ einen starken Beitrag. Im Live-Podcast kam sie mit dem sächsischen Wissenschaftsminister Sebastian Gemko und Dr. Tim Hentschel, dem Direktor vom Barkhausen Institut, ins Gespräch und konnte einem breiten Publikum sehr eingängig die Wichtigkeit des Transfers von Wissenschaft zu Wirtschaft näher bringen. Das Gespräch wurde souverän von Marit Scheuringer und Florian Salomon aus dem CRTD moderiert.

Unsere allererste SaxoCell FuckUpNight über Start-ups in der Biomedizin war ein großartiger Abend voller Einblicke in unternehmerische Risiken aus erster Hand und erfrischenden persönlichen Erfahrungen unserer wunderbaren Referenten Dr. Anne-Kristin Heninger und Prof. Matthias Hebrok.
Die vielen Fragen des interessierten Publikums führten zu einer anregenden Diskussion über die Risiken und Vorteile des Scheiterns in der Wissenschaft.
Ein besonderer Dank geht an das COSMO Wissenschaftsforum für den gemütlichen und gut ausgestatteten Veranstaltungsraum.
Das begeisterte Feedback unserer Gäste ermutigt uns, dieses Format fortzusetzen.
Wir veranstalteten zwei dynamische Pitch-Trainingstage für unsere Projekte zur Vorbereitung auf unseren SaxoCell-Retreat im Juni.
Die Projektvertreter präsentierten ihre 8-minütigen Pitches vor den anderen Teilnehmenden. Auf Input und Feedback durch unseren Coach Markus Schmittberger folgte eine lebhafte Diskussion. Mit weiterem Handout-Material ausgestattet, sind die Projekte nun bereit zu glänzen!

Der erste SaxoCell Patientennachmittag für Blutkrebspatient:innen fand in Leipzig statt.
Mit zahlreichen interessierten Patient:innen und deren Familien haben wir über Gen- und Zelltherapien gesprochen und innovative Behandlungsmöglichkeiten für Blutkrebserkrankungen kennengelernt. Die Teilnehmenden konnten sich untereinander vernetzen und viele wertvolle Einblicke in die Zukunft der Medizin gewinnen, wie sie nicht immer möglich sind.
Im ersten Teil der Veranstaltung haben Fachärzt:innen aus der Niederlassung, einer Uniklinik und einer Rehaklinik den Patientenweg von der Praxis über die Klinik bis zur Reha näher beleuchtet und ihre Perspektiven zur Thematik erläutert. Zudem teilten zwei Patientenvertreter ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen aus Therapie und Reha. Unter ihnen war Stefan Schwarz, der seinen Behandlungsweg eindrucksvoll in seinem Buch „Bis ins Mark“ beschreibt.
Der zweite Teil der Veranstaltung konzentrierte sich auf das Thema „Krebs – eine ganzheitliche Herausforderung für Patient und Arzt“. Hier lag der Fokus auf der richtigen Ernährung für Tumorpatient:innen. Außerdem gab es einen Beitrag zum Thema „Gender in der Immuntherapie“.
Unser gelungener Patientennachmittag wurde moderiert von Prof. Uwe Platzbecker und Dr. Luisa Mantovani Löffler. Wir danken allen Teilnehmenden, Vortragenden und Organisator:innen der Veranstaltung und freuen uns auf eine Fortsetzung im nächsten Jahr!
Am CRTD in Dresden war eine Expertenjury zu Gast, die unser Konzept zur Entwicklung innovativer Zell- und Gentherapien eingehend geprüft und bewertet hat.
Die Begutachtung durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung und den Projektträger Jülich ist ein entscheidender Schritt in der Weiterentwicklung von SaxoCell. Eine positive Bewertung wäre nicht nur eine Bestätigung der wissenschaftlichen Exzellenz und Innovationskraft unseres Clusters, sondern würde auch den Weg für die nächste Phase der Förderung und Umsetzung ebnen.
Unser Team, bestehend aus erfahrenen Wissenschaftler:innn, Nachwuchskräften, Ärzt:innen und Industriepartnern, hat mit großem Engagement und Leidenschaft dafür gearbeitet, unser Cluster zu repräsentieren. Wir hatten großartige Projektpitches! Unsere PIs standen den Gutachtern Rede und Antwort! Hervorragende Poster verdeutlichten die Ziele und Potentiale unserer Projekte!
Wir bedanken uns bei allen Beteiligten für ihre harte Arbeit und ihre Unterstützung und blicken mit Zuversicht und Optimismus nach vorn. Gemeinsam hoffen wir auf eine positive Bewertung, die uns einen weiteren Schritt in Richtung eines Zell- und Gentherapie Leuchtturms in Sachsen bringt.

Der Siegerturm war 70 Zentimeter hoch! Es gab auch einen Sieger der Herzen, der nicht so hoch, aber sehr stabil war und lange vor dem Ende der Zeitnahme stand.
Unser SaxoCell Retreat 2024 hat nicht nur unsere berufliche Verbundenheit gestärkt, sondern auch wertvolle Einblicke und neue Begeisterung für unsere gemeinsamen Ziele generiert. Vielen Dank an alle, die an dieser Veranstaltung teilgenommen haben! Es war großartig, sich abseits von Schreibtisch und Labortisch kennenzulernen!

SaxoCell kehrt begeistert zurück aus München vom diesjährigen Erfahrungsaustausch der Zukunftscluster.
An zwei Tagen hatten die sieben Cluster der ersten sowie die sieben Cluster der zweiten Wettbewerbsrunde die Möglichkeit, sich untereinander zu vernetzen und zu wesentlichen Themen wie Clustermanagement, Verstetigung und Industriekooperationen auszutauschen. Mit dabei waren unser SaxoCell-Sprecher Frank Buchholz sowie Maren Henneken und Stefanie Binder vom Hub-Team.
Gastgeber in diesem Jahr waren die beiden Münchner Cluster MCube und CNATM. Neben thematischen Schwerpunkten Mobilität und Nukleinsäuretherapien wurden Best Practices zur Clusterverstetigung, etwa von BioRN, vorgestellt. In der Paneldiskussion erhielten die Teilnehmenden wertvolle Impulse zur Nachwuchs- und Fachkräftegewinnung sowie zum Transfer der Zukunftscluster in die zweite Förderphase. Ein offener Austausch mit dem BMBF und dem Projektträger Jülich rundete das Meeting ab.
Wie in den beiden Jahren zuvor, bot auch dieser Erfahrungsaustausch eine ideale Gelegenheit, neue Eindrücke zu gewinnen, voneinander zu lernen und alte Kontakte aufzufrischen. Wir freuen uns auf das Treffen im nächsten Jahr!
At the beginning of June, our two-day SaxoCell retreat was a resounding success, offering a perfect blend of productive discussions and engaging activities. PIs and scientists from our projects and platforms, members from the SaxoCell Hub as well as our Scientific Advisory Board representatives gathered at Congress Hotel Chemnitz.
Our agenda was packed with insightful discussions, innovative pitches, and a comprehensive outlook on our future projects and perspectives.
The highlight of our retreat was the team challenge, where we formed eight teams to build spaghetti towers – aiming for the highest – fostering creativity and teamwork. The winning tower measured 70 centimetres! There was also a winner of hearts which was not as high but very stable and ready long before the end of the challenge.
Our SaxoCell Retreat 2024 not only strengthened our professional bonds but also provided valuable insights and renewed enthusiasm for our collective goals. Thank you to everyone who was part of this event! It was great to get to know each other apart from desk and bench!
Once again this year in Dresden, science enthusiasts of all ages had the chance to get to know SaxoCell and learn about the latest advances in cell and gene therapy in discussions with our hub team.
Our tried-and-tested games and craft materials were available at our booth, including the colourful magnetic fishing game on CAR-T cell therapy and the entertaining immune cell quiz. We were delighted to welcome so many curious visitors at our stand!
The enthusiasm and curiosity of the visitors made the event truly special. Seeing so many people eager to learn about scientific advancements and participate in our activities was incredibly rewarding. We look forward to continuing this tradition and sharing more exciting developments at future events. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the night unforgettable!
SaxoCell is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and an independent expert jury for a second phase of funding in the Clusters4Future initiative.
We are very happy about this as it highlights the potential and achievements of SaxoCell, a pioneering cluster for innovative cell and gene therapies.

SaxoCell returns from Munich after this year’s Clusters4Future experience exchange.
Over two days, the seven clusters from both the first and second rounds of the competition had the opportunity to network and exchange ideas on key topics like cluster management, sustainability, and industrial collaborations. Representing us were SaxoCell spokesperson Frank Buchholz, along with Maren Henneken and Stefanie Binder from the Hub team.
This year’s hosts were Munich-based clusters MCube and CNATM. In addition to their thematic focuses on mobility and nucleic acid therapies, Best Practices on cluster sustainability, such as those presented by BioRN, were shared. During the panel discussion, participants received valuable insights into attracting young talent and skilled professionals, as well as transitioning Clusters4Future to the second funding phase. An open dialogue with representatives from the BMBF and Projektträger Jülich rounded off the meeting.
As in the past two years, the annual exchange provided an ideal opportunity to gain new insights, learn from one another, and reconnect with long-standing contacts. We’re looking forward to next year!
